It's a three-peat for the Des Moines Register!

For the third consecutive year, the Des Moines Register has been named the INA’s “Newspaper of the Year.” The presentation of the Newspaper of the Year as well as other awards in the INF Better Newspaper Contests, culminated two days of educational sessions, social gatherings and trade show exhibitions that made up the 2008 INA Convention and Trade Show Feb. 7-8. The event was held at the downtown Des Moines Marriot.

Even though Mother Nature dumped over a dozen inches of snow on parts of Iowa, INA members were not deterred from attending the annual event. Registration numbers were high again this year, with 830 people registered for the convention, making it the highest attendance for any state press association in the country for three years running. Ninety-four weeklies and 38 dailies were represented.

INA again partnered with the Iowa College Media Association to allow interaction between college students interested in journalism careers and journalism professionals. A total of 122 ICMA students and advisers took part in the activities. A Mentor-Student Luncheon Thursday afternoon provided a forum for students interested in media careers to meet and mingle with Iowa’s publishers, advertising and editorial professionals. The mentors and students continued the session by partnering and going over the students’ resumes, interview skills and future plans.

Other activities Thursday included two sessions intended to help Iowa’s newspapers make a smooth and successful transition into the digital age. “iWebNet: Risk-Free Online Revenue” and “Reinventing the Community Newspaper” offered information on the new iWebNet online advertising network as well as examples of great online journalism and tips to how your paper can adopt similar strategies.

Following these sessions, the association’s three boards of directors held their annual meetings and board officer elections. The INF Live Auction was again a highlight of the Thursday evening Trade Show Reception, which allowed registrants an opportunity to socialize and check out the products, services and ideas of 25 exhibitors.

Friday’s educational sessions included:
• Postal favorite Max Heath returned to help publishers and circulation directors better understand postal regulations and maximize savings.
• Advertising, circulation and roundtable sessions and the display of INF Better Newspaper Contest winners allowed newspapers to share winning ideas.
• Technology guru Kevin Slimp provided tips on working with Photoshop as well as insight into new technology for the newspaper industry.
• Peter Wagner, publisher of the nationally award-winning Sheldon N’West Iowa Review, presented popular sessions offering dozens of ways to increase advertising sales.
• Numerous Iowa journalists offered tips on starting new web sites, beefing up advertising business with special web products for current web sites and covering news in an online world.
• Award-winning writer Kiley Miller of the Burlington Hawk Eye gave a moving presentation, sharing his knowledge of how to write engaging feature stories. Larry Ballard of the Des Moines Register added to the writing program with a session covering how to grab readers’ attention with effective leads.
• Other advertising sessions included a basic primer for advertising sales reps and the opportunity to ask questions of a panel of current newspaper advertisers.
• A panel of knowledgeable Newspaper in Education leaders presented methods a newspaper can employ to develop a succesesful NIE program and build readership among youth.
• Past Presidents’ Luncheon keynote speaker Phil Currie, senior vice president/news, Gannett Co., Inc. and a member of Gannett’s Newspaper Operating Committee, gave a speech titled “Get Me Rewrite: Newspapers Aren’t Dead After All,” exploring the exciting future of the newspaper industry.

Both up-and-coming writers and seasoned newspaper professionals were honored throughout the day Friday.

During Friday evening’s Awards Banquet, 2008 Master Editor-Publisher awards were given to recipients who have worked hard, thought soundly, influenced unselfishly, and lived honorably. The winners were Martin Bunge, publisher of the Marengo Pioneer-Republican; Gary Milks, publisher of the Fort Madison Daily Democrat; and Howard Query, publisher of the Mason City Globe Gazette.

Named Outstanding Young Iowa Journalists for their achievements in the newspaper industry were: Sara Konrad, Iowa Falls Times-Citizen; Eric Page, Davenport Quad-City Times; and Reid Forgrave, Des Moines Register. The Young Iowa Journalist award is presented jointly by the Iowa Newspaper Foundation and the journalism schools at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and Drake University.

Two individuals were inducted into the Iowa Newspaper Foundation’s Individual Heritage Club based on generous donations they have made. They were Gary Milks, Fort Madison Daily Democrat and Rich Paulsen, Creston News Advertiser. The recipients join 55 other individuals or couples who are already members of this elite group. With the gifts of those recognized at the banquet, the Individual Heritage Club now represents a total of $290,000 in contributions to the Iowa Newspaper Foundation.

Four Distinguished Service Award winners were honored for their outstanding service to the newspaper profession and their communities at Friday’s Past Presidents’ Luncheon. Recipients of this honor included Sharon Alban, publisher of the Ogden Reporter; Bill Tubbs, publisher of the Eldridge North Scott Press; Terry Wilson, director of community relations and niche publications for the Davenport Quad-City Times; and Bill Wundram, columnist and associate editor of the Davenport Quad-City Times.

The INF’s Live and Silent Auctions had another great year, with total receipts of $7,311. The Live Auction was held during the Trade Show Reception, with Jim Normandin, publisher of the Dubuque Telegraph Herald, serving as the auctioneer.
Items sold at the live auction raised $2,925 for the Foundation. The biggest ticket item was a trip to International Falls, Minnesota, donated by Explore Minnesota Tourism. The vacation garnered $1,000 from Steve Fisher of the Dubuque Telegraph Herald.

Receipts from the INF’s Silent Auction totaled $4,386. The item netting the highest amount was a recycled newspaper decorative bowl donated by Jennifer Asa, and purchased by Jo Martin of the Iowa Falls Times-Citizen. Several art prints, framed comic strips and gift baskets each brought in $100-plus for the Foundation.

General Excellence winners in their respective circulation classes were the Spencer Daily Reporter and Carroll Daily Times Herald (tie), Des Moines Register, Sergeant Bluff Advocate, Adel Dallas Co. News and Sheldon N’West Iowa Review.

Best of Class Advertising trophies for their respective classes went to the Webster City Daily Freeman-Journal, Waterloo Courier, Sergeant Bluff Advocate, Sac City Sun and Sheldon N’West Iowa Review.
