Iowa Newspaper Association All-State Baseball Teams chosen

 

DES MOINES - The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2007 All-State Baseball selections Tuesday, selecting first, second, third teams and team captains for classes 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A.

 

The four seniors selected as team captains are 4A - Jared Norris, Urbandale High School; 3A - Kevin Schuver, Marion High School; 2A - Cory Ege, Cherokee High School; and 1A - Andy Beck, Lansing, Kee High School.

Jared Norris of Urbandale was selected as captain of the Class 4A teams. A left-handed batter, he led the CIML Central with a .466 batting average and 14 doubles as the Jayhawks qualified for the state tournament. He ranked second overall in the CIML conference with his eight home runs and 38 runs batted in. He was named the First-team All-Conference first baseman in a league that sent three teams to the state tournament. His regular season totals included 53 runs scored and a .486 batting average with 11 HRs and 47 runs batted in. He will attend Yavapai (Ariz.) Junior College, in Phoenix.

 

Marion High School catcher Kevin Schuver was named captain for the Class 3A teams. A first-teamer last year, Marion coach Steve Fish said, “I wouldn't trade him for anybody in the state.” A steadying character behind home plate, Schuver helped his team qualify for the state tournament in 2006. In 2007, the right-handed hitting Schuver had seven home runs, 10 doubles and 43 runs batted in. He intends to continue his career at Kirkwood Community College.

 

Cherokee High School standout Cory Ege was voted captain of the Class 2A teams. Going into the state 2A finals, he was 10-0 as a pitcher with an earned run average under 1.30. He tossed a one-run, four-hit gem in the 2007 state semifinals against North Fayette. Ege is also a standout shortstop and hitter. His season average was .515, and he blasted eight home runs while driving in 54 runs. He will enroll at the University of Northern Iowa this fall.

 

Andy Beck from Kee High School of Lansing received captain honors for the 1A All-State teams. He is the Iowa all-time hits leader with 275 hits in his career. He had 10 home runs, 49 runs batted in and 43 runs entering postseason play. A first-rate pitcher, Beck had a 9-0 record allowing just six walks and 38 hits. Beck is undecided where he will continue his education and baseball career.
