INA Announces 2008 All-State Selections for Boys Basketball

 

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2008 All-State Boys Basketball teams for Class 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A Tuesday, naming Iowa City High senior Matt Gatens as Mr. Basketball.

 

Gatens, a three-time Iowa Newspaper Association All-State honoree, is a repeat first team selection.   A steady scorer with an accurate eye, he finished as City High’s all-time leading scorer with 1,928 points for his career. This season he averaged 22.1 points per game, shooting .833 from the free-throw line and .397 from 3-point range.  He is an athletic player who is a good ball handler and passer.

Demonstrating his versatility, he averaged 6.1 rebounds per game and played post and perimeter defense.  While leading City High to the 2008 4A championship, he spent much of the title game guarding 6-8, all-stater L.A. Pomlee of Davenport Central.  Gatens was named captain of the 4A all-tournament team.  He was also academic all-conference.

 

He will continue his education and basketball career at the University of Iowa.
