Iowa Newspaper Association All-State Baseball Teams chosen

DES MOINES - The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2009 All-State Baseball selections Tuesday, selecting first, second, third teams and team captains for classes 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A.

The four seniors selected as team captains are 4A – Dean McArdle, Sioux City North High School; 3A – Matt Dermody, Norwalk High School; 2A – Joey Flattery, St. Edmond (Fort Dodge) High School; and 1A – Jordan Adams, Newman Catholic (Mason City) High School.

Dean McArdle of Sioux City North, 4A team captain missed a no-hitter by one out in the 4A championship game as the Stars captured the large school title defeating Iowa City West. A four-time INA all-state selection, McArdle will attend Stanford University on a baseball scholarship. He finished the season allowing just two earned runs for a 0.38 earned run average. McArdle, who strained a ligament in his arm earlier in the year, finished the season with a 7-1 record, and was 37-7 for his career. The championship was North’s first state baseball title.

 

Matt Dermody of Norwalk was named the captain of the Class 3A All-State team. Dermody, a 26th round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates, will have to make a decision following the season on whether to pursue major league baseball in the fall, or follow through with a scholarship offer to attend the University of Iowa. The Norwalk senior led his team to a state championship throwing a complete game, four-hit shutout in the final against Storm Lake. He finished with a 10-3 record. As a hitter, Dermody broke the Norwalk single-season school record for home runs in a season with 13.

 

Joey Flattery of St Edmond of Fort Dodge was selected the 2A captain. Flattery started the state championship game and yielded three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings to lead the Gaels to their first state title. Flattery, an Iowa Central recruit, threw his second victory of the tournament to finish with an 11-0 record. A second team selection in 2008, Flattery capped a stellar senior season slugging seven home runs with 33 runs batted in while hitting .517. In the regular season, he struck out 116 batters and allowed less than one run per game with a 0.98 earned run average.

 

Catcher Jordan Adams of Mason City Newman capped his fourth year as an INA All-State first team selection with recognition as the 1A captain. Selected as a 2A first team player his first two seasons, Adams is the state’s all-time baseball leader in grand slams with a career total of eight. He finished his career second all-time in runs batted in and fourth best in home runs finishing with 52. Adams will continue his academic and athletic career at Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant.
