INA Announces 2009All-State Selections for Boys Basketball

 

The Iowa NewspaperAssociation announced its 2009 All-State Boys Basketball teams for Class 4A,3A, 2A and 1A Tuesday, naming Bishop Heelan High School (Sioux City) seniorBrennan Cougill as Mr. Basketball.

 

A 6-9, 270-pound senior whocommitted to the University of Iowa before his junior season, Cougill ledHeelan with 28 points as the Crusaders defeated Norwalk for the 3A statechampionship game on Saturday. During his career Heelan made three consecutivestate tournament appearances and compiled a 67-12 record, including SaturdaynightÕs victory.

 

Cougill has averaged 17.8points and 13.4 rebounds this season for a team that stood 26-2 with a 17-gamewinning streak, breaking a school record with a 24th win in asemifinal game against Carroll. For his career CougillÕs 1,602 points and 1,033rebounds have both shattered city records in Sioux City. He was the seventeenthplayer in Iowa history to reach 1,000 career rebounds and the eleventh tocollect 1,000 rebounds and more than 1,500 points.
