Newspaper
in Education
Newspaper in Education is a cooperative effort between
schools and newspapers to promote the use of newspapers as an
educational resource and to encourage tomorrow's readers.
The Iowa Newspaper Foundation works closely with
the two dozen NIE coordinators in the state who cooperatively
produce an annual teacher's guide. The guide, which is provided
at no cost to classroom teachers, offers ideas for using newspapers
to teach a variety of subjects.

National Resources
The Newspaper
Association of America Foundation is the administrative organization
for NIE at the national level.
New NIE personnel may contact NAA
and get on its newsletter mailing list as well as register for
for their e-mail NIE listserve. NAA's NIE Manager, Jim Abbott, is a former NIE Coordinator. NAA
has NIE materials and information about starting and maintaining
a program.
NAA and SNPA
offer excellent training conferences each year. For
members, SNPA's NIE Conference is in February in Atlanta,
and NAA's NIE Conference is generally in May and rotates among
east, west, or central US cities.
A must for NIE departments is a subscription to
R C Anderson Associates, Inc.'s NIE Information Service.
Subscription cost is based on circulation size. It's quite economical
for small papers. The service provided monthly materials focusing
on success programs, promotional ads, and ideas; NIE research
and NIE clip art and materials that can be photocopied.
