Press Operator Apprenticeship Program
A high-skill, low-cost training opportunity
The Press Operator Apprenticeship is a full-time employment program combined with both on-the-job training and related on-line classroom instruction. An experienced and skilled press worker teaches the practical skills learned on the job. It is federally licensed and coordinated through the INF and Iowa Valley Community College District. The Iowa Department of Economic Development funds the program.
Who can enroll as an apprentice?
To participate, a publisher must have a potential apprentice who is working full time and willing to commit to a two-year program.
How long does it occur?
The program lasts two years and includes on-the-job training and on-line education.
What are the training areas?
Training topics and on-line instruction covers Paper Transfer Systems, Press Operations, Ink and Inking Systems, Corrective and Preventative Maintenance and Quality Control.
Where does the training occur?
The college courses are offered free of charge and were developed by Iowa Valley Community College. Classes can be completed on almost any computer connected to the Internet. All on-the-job training occurs on the press owned by the participating newspaper.
