The Iowa Newspaper Foundation: What we do for you!

Scholarships

The INF administers a scholarship program that provided eight scholarships totaling $7,250 this year to college students preparing for a newspaper career.
Scholarships are also provided for high school students to attend the Iowa High School Press Association’s Summer and Fall Journalism Workshops.

Newspapers In Education

The INF distributed NIE Teacher’s Guides to each newspaper in Iowa. An additional 1,250 Guides were purchased by INF to distribute to members of the Iowa Reading Association.

Freedom of Information

The INF worked with the Iowa Freedom of Information Council to put an updated “Journalist’s Guide to Openness in Iowa” into the hands of every Iowa newspaper reporter.
The INF presented a check for $10,000 to the IFOIC to establish the Openness Defense Fund to encourage compliance with Iowa’s Open Meetings and Open Records laws. The INF established and maintains an ethics e-mail listserv to give editors, publishers and journalism educators a forum to discuss newsroom ethics concerns.

Recruiting Qualified Journalists

The INF works to build relationships among newspapers, educators and students to ensure that career opportunities at Iowa newspapers attract top candidates.

Examples...
The INF underwrote the startup of the Iowa College Media Association (ICMA) which brings more than 180 college students to the INA convention each year.
The INF published a well-received Newspaper Career Guide. Copies were provided to all Iowa high schools.
Each year the INF publishes a listing of internships available at Iowa newspapers.

Powerful Partnerships

The INF works with other organizations to improve the future of Iowa’s newspapers and communities.

Examples...
The INF is collaborating with the Iowa School Board Foundation on CLIK (Communities for Literate Iowa Kids) an early childhood literacy program.
The INF partnered with the Iowa Association of Business and Industry to bring members a new interactive seminar focused on business issues in Iowa.
