Freedom of Information

The Iowa Newspaper Association is a staunch advocate of maintaining the state of a free press in Iowa. INA celebrates the importance of freedom of information as a benefit to all Iowans.

INA works with the Iowa Freedom of Information Council to promote the First Amendment and openness in government.

The IFOIC has created the Openness Defense Fund to provide support for litigation and educational programs to better acquaint Iowans with the Iowa laws on meetings of governmental agencies and on access to government records. Find out more about the Openness Defense Fund here.

If you are a journalist wanting to find out more about Iowa’s open meetings laws or the rights journalists hold, check out the Iowa Access Guide or Open Meetings Open Records Handbook.

Another great resource for newspaper professionas are the Sunshine Advisories released by the Iowa Attorney General's office each month. Click here to view the recent Sunshine Advisories.

Read a presentation given before the Iowa Legislature in February 2007, by Kathleen Richardson, executive secretary of the IFOIC.
